Milestone: More than 300,000 active digital driving licences in Austria
Digitalization in Austria has achieved another significant milestone. Approximately six months after its official launch, Florian Tursky, State Secretary for Digitalization and Broadband Expansion, announced that over 300,000 digital driving licenses have been successfully activated in Austria. This ongoing popularity underscores the acceptance and further potential for secure, innovative, and user-friendly digital identity applications.
Launch in October 2022
The launch of the new app “eAusweise” took place just last October when State Secretary Florian Tursky and Minister of the Interior, Gerhard Karner, officially introduced the “eAusweise” app and the digital mobile driving license for the Republic of Austria. Since then, the digital mobile driving license serves as official digital proof during traffic controls by law enforcement authorities and as a recognized identification document for certain services. The app does not require an active internet connection for presenting the digital mobile driving license – citizens can present it entirely offline.
youniqx platform “MIA” provided valuable expertise
The “eAusweise” app was developed by youniqx Identity AG, the digital subsidiary of the Austrian State Printing House (OeSD). Since 2017, OeSD has been consolidating its expertise in secure digital identity within its in-house digital subsidiary, youniqx Identity AG. With the specially developed eID application “MIA” (“My Identity App”), youniqx Identity is one of the pioneers in the field of electronic identities.
“MIA” has already been successfully launched into full operation in two European countries. Based on “MIA,” the Liechtenstein digital identity “eID.li” was adapted to individual customer needs within a few months of development and launched in April 2020. The flexible “MIA” covers multiple use cases, such as digital IDs or electronic health records. This expertise in digital identities and digital IDs has now been applied to the successful implementation of the digital driving license for the Republic of Austria.
